How does the treatment work?
We inject botulinum toxin into the large jaw muscle on the right and left. Chewing is not affected. Because the muscle is large, the full effect only sets in after about 14 days. It lasts up to six months; as it then wears off, we recommend repeating the treatment after 4 months.
Advantages
Unlike splint therapy, botulinum toxin can stop the grinding: the muscle relaxes more and more over time, so clenching and grinding cease, and the enlarged jaw muscle recedes. If this succeeds, grinding ideally does not return after six months. Many patients appreciate a side effect: the lower third of the face looks slimmer.
Possible side effects
Small bruises can appear at the injection sites; in rare cases, a dry mouth.

Who is it suitable for?
In principle, the treatment is suitable for anyone who suffers from bruxism. With severe grinding, it can be used alongside other measures from the outset to relieve symptoms quickly and pave the way for relaxation techniques. It is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women or people with neuromuscular diseases.
