Removable braces

Removable braces are particularly suitable for children and teenagers who are still growing. They use the natural development of the teeth and jaws to correct misalignments gently and early. At our practice in Baar, every appliance is custom-made.

What they are used for

  • Widening a narrow upper or lower jaw
  • Correcting the bite, for example when the lower jaw is set back
  • Treating crossbite and deep bite
  • Creating space for the permanent teeth
  • Correcting unfavourable habits such as tongue thrusting or mouth breathing

What types are there?

Active plates consist of an acrylic base with wire elements and a small expansion screw. They move individual teeth or gradually widen the jaw.

Functional appliances such as the Bionator act on the upper and lower jaw at the same time. They use the forces of the oral muscles to guide jaw growth in the right direction.

For adults, clear aligners are the modern, almost invisible form of removable braces.

Advantages

  • Easy to remove for eating, brushing and sports
  • Simple oral hygiene
  • Gentle treatment that makes use of natural growth
  • Can shorten or avoid later treatment with fixed braces

Frequently asked questions

How long must the appliance be worn each day?

This depends on the appliance. It is usually worn in the afternoon and overnight. Consistently keeping to the agreed wearing time is key to success.

From what age are removable braces suitable?

Usually during the mixed dentition, i.e. from around school age. We determine the ideal time during the initial consultation.

How is the appliance cleaned?

Clean it daily with a toothbrush and water, and always keep it in the case provided when it is not in your mouth.

Does the appliance affect speech?

Speech often feels slightly unusual for the first few days. Children usually get used to it very quickly.
