Treatments Orthodontics

Bionator

The Bionator is a removable appliance used in functional orthodontics. At our practice in Baar, we use it mainly for children and teenagers who are still growing.

What is the Bionator?

Unlike conventional braces, the Bionator exerts hardly any active pressure on individual teeth. It sits loosely in the mouth and uses the natural forces of the tongue, lips and cheeks to guide jaw growth in the right direction.

How it works

When your child swallows, speaks or closes the mouth, the Bionator guides the upper and lower jaw into a more favourable position relative to each other. The muscles adapt to the new, healthy movement pattern, and the jaws grow accordingly. This treats not only the teeth but also the causes of a misalignment.

When is it used?

Depending on the findings, we use different types of Bionator, each individually adapted to your child.

  • Lower jaw set too far back
  • Increased overjet and deep bite
  • Open bite
  • Dysfunctions of the tongue and lips, for example when swallowing
  • Habitual mouth breathing

The right time

The Bionator is effective as long as the jaws are still growing, so an early orthodontic check-up is important. During the initial consultation we determine whether and when treatment with a Bionator is appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

How long must the Bionator be worn each day?

Usually in the afternoon, evening and overnight, but not while eating or doing sports. We set the exact wearing time individually. The more consistently it is worn, the better the result.

Does the Bionator hurt?

No. As it sits loosely in the mouth and works without strong pressure, children usually tolerate it very well. It takes a few days to get used to, including when speaking.

How long does treatment take?

This depends on the findings and on growth, usually between one and two years. Sometimes a shorter treatment with fixed braces follows.

How is the Bionator cared for?

Clean it daily with a toothbrush and water, and always keep it in its case when it is not in the mouth.
